Revealing the Light: A Contemporary Transformation of a Traditional Maltese Townhouse

What began as an Interior Design project soon evolved into a much more comprehensive transformation of this traditional Maltese Townhouse situated in an Urban Conservation Area..

When we first visited the property, the main challenge was immediately apparent. Despite its beautiful traditional features and undeniable charm, the house felt dark and inward-looking.

A series of small, compartmentalised rooms restricted the flow of both light and movement, creating interiors that felt enclosed and disconnected from one another.

During our initial inspection, we also identified significant issues with the existing roof, which ultimately required replacement and the submission of a Dangerous Structures application.

While these necessary interventions became an important part of the project, they were not the driving force behind the design.

The greatest opportunity lay in reimagining the home's spatial experience — transforming a dark, fragmented townhouse into a bright, flowing contemporary residence while carefully preserving the traditional character and architectural elements that make Maltese homes so unique.

Led by Architect Rune Bo Jakobsen together with Project Manager Keely Jakobsen, the project centred on opening up the home while respecting its Maltese character and architectural heritage. The layout was carefully reconfigured to improve flow between spaces and allow natural light to penetrate deeper into the house. Areas that once felt dark and compartmentalised were transformed into bright, welcoming living spaces that feel connected and effortless to move through.

At the same time, the interiors were reimagined with a contemporary design approach.

Clean lines, carefully selected materials, bespoke detailing and custom furniture designs were introduced while retaining the authentic features that give Maltese townhouses their unique charm.

The result is a home that feels modern and refined without losing its sense of place.

Like many projects in Malta, the renovation came with its share of challenges.

Ongoing roadworks in the area created access difficulties throughout construction, requiring careful coordination of contractors, deliveries, and schedules. Nevertheless, through close project management and hands-on involvement at every stage, the entire project was completed within a single year and on budget — a remarkable achievement for a full townhouse renovation.

At Jakobsen Artful Living we provide a complete design and project management service, guiding clients from initial concept and feasibility through permits, contractor coordination, site supervision, and final completion.
