Residential Restoration & Interior Design Project

This one-year project evolved from a pure interior design brief into a full-scale restoration and structural intervention, following the discovery of a deteriorating roof that required a Dangerous Structures application. Taking on the roles of both architect and project manager, the works were carefully delivered on time and within budget, despite global supply delays affecting material shipments.

The design approach focused on preserving and enhancing the building’s original Maltese character while introducing a calm, contemporary aesthetic. Natural light was a key driver—transforming what was once an introverted structure into a brighter, more open living environment. Strategic placement of artworks further amplifies the sense of space and visual flow throughout the home.

A cohesive material palette was central to the design. Travertine flooring runs throughout, harmonising beautifully with the existing limestone façade.  Restored timber elements—including the traditional Maltese front door and balcony—retain the building’s authenticity in keeping with the surrounding streetscape, ensuring the project remains contextually sensitive.

A soft sage green palette unifies the interiors, expressed through bespoke kitchen cabinetry, wall mouldings, and custom-designed fitted furniture.  Set across three levels, the home balances modern and traditional elements, creating a seamless and harmonious spatial experience. Patterned tiles along the staircase act as a visual thread, linking each floor. Carefully considered lighting—including spotlights, track systems, and accent fixtures—enhances architectural features and adds depth and warmth.

Soft furnishings, flowing curtains, and a restrained palette contribute to a welcoming, homely atmosphere, while the rooftop has been reimagined as a tranquil green oasis were new wrought iron elements were also introduced.

All mechanical and electrical systems were meticulously planned to maximise efficiency while respecting the integrity of the historic structure.

The result is a refined, timeless home that honours its heritage while embracing modern living.
