Today was installation day for Passiġġata, our latest exhibition celebrating movement, architecture and the experience of discovering a city on foot.

Set within the reception and beautiful central courtyard of one of Valletta's distinguished historic buildings 171 Old Bakery Street, the exhibition creates a dialogue between contemporary painting, keramik sculpture and Malta's architectural heritage. The building itself has been recognised for its sensitive restoration and conservation, making it a fitting setting for an exhibition inspired by the relationship between people and place.

As we unpacked paintings, positioned sculptures and watched the afternoon light move through the courtyard, the exhibition began to take shape. The changing Mediterranean light filtering through the atrium echoed many of the themes explored throughout the collection—light, movement, atmosphere and the quiet beauty found when we slow down and walk through our cities.

The exhibition brings together the work of Danish Architect and Artist Rune Bo Jakobsen and keramik sculptor Keely Jakobsen. While Rune's paintings respond to the colours, architecture and atmosphere of Malta's streets and skylines through his distinctive approach of Reactive Impressionism, Keely's hand-built keramik sculptures explore movement, gesture and organic form through unique one-of-a-kind works finished with reactive glazes. Together, the works create a conversation between canvas and clay, architecture and movement.

The title, Passiġġata, refers to the traditional evening stroll—a ritual deeply rooted in Mediterranean life. More than simply walking, it is about observing, connecting and experiencing a place at a human pace. That spirit runs throughout the exhibition, inviting visitors to pause, look closely and rediscover the familiar streets of Valletta through colour, light and form.

The exhibition will remain on display until 30 September 2026.

A digital exhibition catalogue is available to download directly via link below.

We hope that whether you are visiting Valletta for the first time or walking streets you know by heart, Passiġġata encourages you to see the city a little differently.
